Actions for Change

“Street to Mbari” (1964) by Jacob Lawrence

Like many, my heart aches in the wake of recent events in America, which have once again laid bare the deep-seated prejudice and inequality that persist in our society. Such tragedies thrive when individuals perceive others as different, as lesser, and as less deserving.

It is our collective duty as human beings to be part of the solution.

We must take ACTION, paving the way for enduring, substantive change.

Here are some concrete steps you can take:

  • ENGAGE with your local, state, and federal elected officials.

  • COMMUNICATE with your children about the current events.

  • SUPPORT petitions that will reach our leaders.

  • CONTRIBUTE to organizations aiding in these efforts if you have the means.

  • ENRICH your understanding through education.

  • VOICE your concerns when you witness injustice in your community.

  • And PLEASE, exercise your right to VOTE! I cannot emphasize enough how crucial it is to make your voice heard at the ballot box, not only at the federal level, but also at the state and local levels.

This transformation must occur from the highest echelons of power. While we can protest and resist with all our might, without systemic change from within, these acts of violence and injustices will persist.

We require leaders who stand in solidarity with our minority communities. Who will reform our justice system? Who will champion the cause of the marginalized in this nation?

Now, more than ever, your voice holds weight. USE IT.

I pledge to do better. To not remain silent. To stand alongside and support the black community. To be a more conscientious global citizen.

And I urge you to do the same.

Personally, I highly recommend the impactful 1619 Podcast. Expand the diversity of voices you engage with, be more inclusive, and take a stand for what you believe in.
